Here is an angle with a protractor beside it. Where does the protractor need to sit before you can read the angle?
Take two or three hands-up answers, not open call-outs. Listen for on the corner / on the point — that is the vertex, and it is the first thing to get right. Don't confirm the reading yet; the how-to comes next.
Look at these angles measured on the protractor. Each time, check two things: the centre sits on the vertex, and one arm lies along a 0. Look closely at the 145° angle, both scales are showing at once, so you have to pick the ring that starts at 0 on your arm.
This last one is nearly a straight line, so the reading is easy to miss.
Say the move a pupil should make, not the number: find the 0 on your arm first, then read round.
Today we work through three angles together on the board: first 25°, then 115°, then 160°. Before each one, say which scale (inner or outer) you would read and why, then a pupil comes up and drags the arm so we can check.
Talk this one through together. A different pupil comes to the board for each of the three angles; the rest of the class names the ring first and then agrees or corrects out loud once the arm is dragged.
Both scales are on. Before each drag, ask the class to point to the 0 on the arm and name the ring they will follow. 115° and 160° are the ones where reading the wrong ring gives 65° and 20° — head that off by making them name the ring first. Revoice a strong answer: the arm is on the left 0, so we follow the inner ring round.
In your maths copy, sketch each angle you measure and write its reading underneath, including which scale you used (inner or outer). Underline the trickiest reading of the round.
Walk the row glancing at whether pupils have noted the scale as well as the number — this is whole-class copybook practice, not marking. The scale note is the thinking; without it the reading is a guess.
Measure five printed angles with your own protractor. For each one, write the reading and which scale (inner or outer) you read. They get trickier as you go: an acute angle, a right angle, two obtuse angles, and finally one just under a straight line.
This is the practice round — real protractors on real angles, so pupils measure at their own desks and the class confirms each reading aloud at the end. Keep the board work brisk rather than over-explaining.
Circulate and catch alignment slips on the spot: the two most common are the centre off the vertex, and reading the ring that does not start at 0 on the arm. Once the round is done, read the trickiest angle aloud together and reconcile any disagreement.
