Look carefully. I laid cubes along the edge of the desk and I say the desk is 4 cubes long.
Hands up if you spotted my mistake. What went wrong with the way the cubes were laid?
We measure with cubes today. First we estimate: that means make a careful guess. Then we lay the cubes end to end so each cube touches the next: no gaps, and no cubes sitting on top of each other.
Watch two lengths. Notice whether the cubes touch with no gaps and none on top, and how close the estimate was.
A new object appears on the board. Think of your guess in your head and keep it quiet until we share. One pupil tells our class estimate at the board, then we Reveal the cube count. Was your guess close?
Three more lengths to measure: a copybook, a bench, and the teacher's table. Think of your guess first each time, then we check the count.
Work through page 74 of the Student Activity Book. Cubes go end to end with no gaps and none on top. Estimate first, then count.
