Look at these two price tags: €1.20 and €1.02.
They look almost the same. Are they the same amount of money? If not, which one is bigger, and how do you know?
Display both amounts side by side and give five seconds of quiet think-time before any hands go up. Take three hands-up answers, not open call-outs.
Do not resolve it here — the point is to unsettle the assumption that the two look alike. The reading and comparison happen in the next steps.
Watch four amounts made on the coin-counter, each already built with euro coins and notes. Read each one aloud and notice how the cent are grouped.
The next one is one cent short of ten. Watch how close it gets to €10 without reaching it.
This last one has coins in almost every column. Read it carefully.
Keep the narration on what is on screen. Let pupils read each amount aloud rather than reading it for them.

Today we build these amounts on the coin-counter, one at a time: €2.35, then €3.05, then €6.40, then €7.99. One pupil taps the coins onto the tray at the board. Everyone else says the cent part aloud first, then watches the total and agrees or corrects before the tap.
The €3.05 one catches people out because the cent part is only five cent, so say its cent part aloud together before anyone taps.
Talk this one through together — one pupil builds at the board while the whole class names the cent part aloud and agrees or corrects out loud before each tap. That turn-and-name keeps the watching pupils working, not just watching.
€3.05 is the trap: the cent part is only five cent, so pupils must use a single 5c coin with no tens-of-cent coin. They still build the 3 whole euros first (a 2e and a 1e, say), then the single 5c. Ask how they would write it (€3.05, with the trailing zero in the tens-of-cent place because there are no ten-cent coins).

Walk the row glancing at the trailing-zero circle and the decimal point placement — this is whole-class copybook practice, not marking. Watch for pupils writing €1.2 instead of €1.20.
Today we make each target amount on the coin-counter, one at a time: €5.05, then €6.40, then €9.99. For the last round we make €9.99 again, but this time using the fewest coins and notes we can.
To use the fewest pieces, start with the biggest note or coin that fits, then fill down to the smaller ones.
This is the practice round — pupils take turns at the board, check each answer, and the class confirms before moving on. Keep the board work brisk rather than over-explaining. €5.05 is a fresh trailing-zero trap: the cent part is only five cent, so hold out for a single 5c coin and the trailing zero in the tens-of-cent place.
The final €9.99 round is the stretch: it asks for the fewest pieces, so pupils have to reach for the biggest coins and notes first (5e + 2e + 2e + 50c + 20c + 20c + 5c + 2c + 2c). Let the class predict how many pieces before checking.
On the fewest-pieces round the counter accepts any total that reaches €9.99 and flags the piece count against par (9) rather than rejecting it. So if a pupil hits €9.99 with more than nine pieces, it marks the total correct but shows the count is above par — prompt them to swap smaller pieces for bigger ones and try again for fewer.
If the IWB or coin-counter is unavailable, run the same targets with the classroom set of plastic euro coins and notes: the pupil at the front makes each amount, and for the final round the class counts the pieces aloud and tries to beat their own count.
