Here is our class tuck-shop price list: a pencil is 30c, a rubber is 20c, a sticker is 50c and a juice is €1.
If you had exactly €1 to spend, which two things could you buy?
Display the four prices as pupils settle. Take three hands-up answers, not open call-outs, and hold off saying whether each is right — that reasoning is the whole lesson. Listen for whether pupils add first or just grab two items.
Watch two spending plans on the budget bar. First plan: €1 to spend, a pencil at 30c and a rubber at 20c. The bar shows 50c spent and 50c still to spend, so this plan fits.
Second plan: €2 to spend, a sticker at 50c and a juice at €1. The bar shows €1.50 spent and 50c still to spend. Notice how we work out the total first, then read what is left.
Two worked plans, one at a time. On the first, point at each price as the running total climbs to 50c, then at the remaining readout — the order matters: add first, then read what is left.
On the second, ask before revealing the remaining figure: the two items come to €1.50 — with €2, how much is left? Hold out for the answer, then confirm on the bar.
Now we build two spending plans together on the budget bar. The items are pencil 30c, rubber 20c, sticker 50c and juice €1.
First, with €1, we build a rubber and a pencil: step each item up to its price, then work out the total and how much is left before we check. Next, with €2, we build a juice and a sticker the same way, and work out the change from €2.
Guided modelling: a pupil steps the items up while the class predicts the total and the change before checking on the bar. This challenge round withholds the answer until Check, so pupils really do the working — do not confirm figures until the class has committed to one.
The steppers move in 10c and 50c, so every price on the list can be reached exactly. Ask each time: does this plan fit the money? The second plan (juice and sticker on €2) comes to exactly €1.50, so the change is 50c from €2. This is the guided run before pupils work the fuller round in the Class Challenge.

Walk the room, glancing for whether pupils add the two prices before working out the change — no individual marking, this is whole-class copybook practice. Look for anyone taking one price from €2 instead of the total.

We work through these in order: a pencil and a sticker together; with €1, a rubber and a pencil; a juice and a rubber, checking whether their total is more than €1; and with €2, a juice and a sticker, then work out the change. Each one adds a little more to think about.
This is the practice round — pupils take turns at the board, check each answer, and the class confirms before moving on. Keep the board work brisk rather than over-explaining.
Build each plan on the budget bar so the class can see the total and the remaining amount. The steppers move in 10c and 50c so every price lands exactly. On the third question the class must total the juice and rubber (€1.20) and see it is more than €1 — the total, not one item, is what has to fit. On the final question, build the juice and sticker (€1.50) and count up to €2 for the change.
