Money: Spending a Small Amount

Choose items from a price list, add them up, and check whether the total fits your budget. Work out the change left over from €2.

    1 - Getting Started ~4 mins

    • pencil — 30c
    • rubber — 20c
    • sticker — 50c
    • juice — €1

    If you had €1 or less to spend, which two things could you buy? Have a think, then share your idea.

    2 - Watch and Notice ~10 mins

    Here are three shopping choices on the coin-counter. Look at the coins for each total, then check: does the total fit inside the money we have? On the last one, look at the change found by counting on.

    3 - Try It Together ~8 mins

    Key point

    Today we build each total on the coin-counter. After each total we check: does it fit €1, or would we need €2?

    • pencil + rubber (30c + 20c)
    • rubber + sticker (20c + 50c)
    • pencil + juice (30c + €1)
    • sticker + juice (50c + €1)

    4 - Work It in Your Copy ~3 mins

    In your maths copy, choose two items from the price list. Write their total, then count on from the total to €2 to find your change.

    5 - Class Challenge ~8 mins

    Key point

    Today we work through these spending questions together, using the price list. Add first, then check it fits.

    1. Which item is the cheapest?
    2. Buy a pencil and a sticker — what is the total?
    3. You have €1 — can you buy a juice and a rubber?
    4. With €2, choose two items and work out your change.
