Learn to add prices by keeping euro and cent in their own columns, and regrouping when cent reach one hundred. Total a shopping basket step by step.

1 - Getting Started ~4 mins

2 - Watch and Notice ~9 mins

Watch me add each pair of prices on the board, keeping the euro under the euro and the cent under the cent.

€0.45 + €1.20, watch the cent columns line up.
€1.35 + €0.85, watch what happens when the cent pass a hundred.
€0.60 + €0.75 + €1.10, three prices, watch the cent total again.
€2.99 + €1.50, watch the cent again when they pass a hundred.

I work each total out by hand on the board.

3 - Try It Together ~11 mins

Now we add some baskets together on the coin-counter at the board. Pupils will come up in turns to lay the coins, and the rest of us count along.

Example

Our first basket is €1.20 + €0.60. Then we do €0.95 + €1.05. Last we do €0.85 + €0.55 + €0.60. Watch the last one — the cent tip over a hundred and trade for a euro.

4 - Add the Basket in Your Copy ~3 mins

5 - Class Challenge ~8 mins

Now we work through these basket problems together, each one a step harder. For each one, read the prices and add them:

two items: €1.20 + €0.60
three items: €0.95 + €1.05 + €0.50
a basket: €2.45 + €1.30 + €0.85
four items: €1.99 + €0.75 + €2.20 + €0.30

Key point

The later ones have cent that pass a hundred, so one hundred cent trade for one euro.
