Think about your lunchbox on a school day. What kinds of food usually go in it? Hands up if you often pack fruit. Hands up if you often pack bread or a sandwich. What do you think those different foods do for your body?
Keep this light: curiosity only, no sorting yet and no food-group list on the board. Quick show of hands is enough. If a few pupils name foods aloud, jot one or two on the board without correcting groups yet.
Key question: Do all the foods in a lunchbox do the same job, or different jobs?
Before the lesson: print the provided food sorting cards and food-group header cards (one set per group). Print the provided Investigation Journal page. Optionally gather a few clean, sealed lunchbox packs from home or the staffroom as real examples to hold up. Check allergy notes for the class before any real packaging is handled.
Here are the six food groups we will use all lesson:

Teach the six groups the class will use all lesson. Put the six names on the board (or leave them visible from the pupil description) before any "which group?" question so everyone shares the same sorting language. Keep the board short; use the table below as your reference. Hold the fuller balanced-lunch and energy language for the packing step later. Today only need the groups and the idea that they do different jobs.
Bridge if useful: these groups match the kinds of shelves pupils may have seen on the HSE Healthy Food for Life food pyramid. Today we use them to judge a lunchbox, not the whole day.

Worked model (say aloud before sorting): Hold up the apple card. I wonder which group this joins. I predict fruit and veg, because it is a fruit that grew on a plant. I check the header cards… yes, fruit and veg. So when we sort, we ask what job the food does, not what colour it is.
When you introduce the protein header, briefly name a second everyday example (hummus pot or tuna) so the full group name is not only egg and ham. A brown soda bread roll is a familiar Irish bread choice under bread, cereal and potato.
Misconception to head off: pupils may say all drinks are the same, or that treats are "bad". Frame treats as a small group we enjoy sometimes, not as forbidden. Water is the everyday drink for school.
Nature of STEM: biologists and nutrition scientists study how food fuels the body so people can stay healthy. Today we sort and design like they do: group first, then choose a mix.
In your group, sort the lunchbox food cards under the six food-group headers. Talk about why each food belongs where you put it. If you disagree, say what made you choose that group.

Milk can spark useful talk (drink and dairy). Accept drinks if the group can explain; note that milk also links to the dairy group. Hummus sits with meat, fish, eggs, beans and nuts because beans are the main ingredient.
Circulate and ask: What job does this food do? Fold watchers in if one pupil is moving cards: Do you agree with that pile? What would you change?
Differentiation: less confident groups start with fruit vs treats only, then add headers. Confident groups justify every placement in one sentence.
Allergy note: cards only need no tasting. If real packs are used, no opening food and hands washed after handling. Prefer a peanut-free hummus example if you show real packaging.
On your Investigation Journal page, record how your group sorted the lunchbox foods. Show which foods went into each food group. Note one food you found tricky and why. Keep the page open: later you will design your own balanced lunch on the same page.
Pupils record on the paper Investigation Journal page in class now (not as homework). Use the same provided page again in the next step for the lunch design and energy note. Do not invent a second homemade sheet. Prompt: draw or list foods under each group; add one short note about a tricky card (for example milk, cereal bar or hummus).
Look-fors: most foods in sensible groups; pupils can say aloud why one food sits where it does; tricky items are questioned rather than guessed in silence.
If groups finished with different choices (for example milk), celebrate the reasoning and agree a class convention for the next step. The completed sort stays available as in-class evidence for the lunch design and closing talk.
A balanced lunch draws food from several main groups, not only treats. Energy means fuel for your body, and the bar shows how much fuel each food gives. Fruit and vegetables also bring vitamins, the tiny amounts your body needs to grow and stay well, which is why a lunch needs more than just fuel.
On the board we will pack a lunchbox from the shelf of everyday foods. Call out what to add. Watch the food-group meters and the energy bar to compare where the fuel comes from, not to judge a lunch as good or bad.
Which groups are we covering, and where does most of the energy come from?
After the class build, design your own balanced lunch on your Investigation Journal page. Choose foods from the shelf we just used (or foods you saw compared on the energy bar). List or sketch what you would pack, name the food groups you used, and write or say where most of its energy would come from. That means naming the food that carried most of the fuel in the class build (for example the sandwich), not remembering a number for every card.
Drive the lunchbox-builder interactive on the IWB in explore mode. Pupils do not need devices. They call out foods; you drag them into the box.
Protected timing (18 minutes total): about 8 minutes for energy framing, one tight teacher model, and a short second build or swap from class ideas; then a protected 10 minutes so every pupil completes their own journal design. If the IWB talk runs long, cut the second build and move straight to individual design. The LO depends on that journal beat.
What appears on screen: a shelf of foods: Wholemeal sandwich, Apple, Carrot sticks, Cheese, Yogurt, Boiled egg, Hummus, Cereal bar, Crisps, Water, Milk carton, each tagged with a food group and an energy value. Live meters show food-group spread; an energy bar shows total energy with a guide mark for a midday meal (a talking point, not a pass mark and not a target to hit). Milk on the shelf lets you revisit the drink-versus-dairy talk from the sort against the meters and bar.
Frame energy before you drag: Energy is fuel for learning and play, and the numbers on the cards show how much fuel each food gives. Fruit and vegetables also bring vitamins, the small amounts the body needs to grow and stay well. We use the bar to compare where most fuel comes from, never to rank home lunches as good or bad.
Model first (one tight cycle): I wonder if we can pack a lunch that covers several groups without filling the box with treats only. I predict sandwich, apple, yogurt, egg and water will spread the groups and still give useful energy. I add those five… I observe fruit and veg, bread, dairy, protein and drinks all light up, and most energy sits in the sandwich (and then yogurt). I think a balanced lunch is about mix of groups, not only how full the box looks.
If time allows, clear or adjust once from class ideas. Ask: Which food groups are missing? Where does most of the energy come from? What happens if we swap the sandwich for crisps?
Individual design beat (required for the LO; protect these minutes): every pupil records on the same provided Investigation Journal page (still paper; no typing; no second homemade sheet). Designs should draw on shelf foods (or foods just compared on the bar) so pupils can reason about energy without inventing figures. They name the groups covered and note where most energy would come from by naming the main fuel food from the class comparison (for example the sandwich), not by recalling exact numbers. Circulate and spot-check two or three journals aloud so the design is pupil work, not only watching the board.
Misconception: highest energy is not automatically "best". Energy matters, but group spread matters too for a school day. The guide mark is for talk, never a score.
