1 - Here All Year or Only Sometimes? ~5 mins

Illustration for Here all year or only sometimes?Which birds stay in Ireland all year, and which only arrive for a season? Think of two of each before we start: a robin on a winter hedge, a seagull on a pier, a swan on a lake.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Name eight birds in Spanish
    • Say which month you would see each one
    • Join a bird and a month in one short sentence

    2 - Eight Spanish Birds ~10 mins

Eight birds, one card at a time. Look at the picture, listen to the Spanish with el or la, then repeat together. After you have said it, check the English.

Sound hooks: búho is two beats (BOO-oh); águila has a soft g like the h in huge; gorrión rolls the rr.

Our sentence chunk: Veo el cisne en marzo = I see the swan in March.

    3 - Match the Birds ~8 mins

Watch the board. When a classmate flips a card, say the Spanish with el or la together quietly. Find each Spanish bird with its English meaning. After a full match, try a quick class whisper: Veo … en … with one month from the board.

4 - Bird and Month in Your Copy ~4 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

Open your copy. Keep these models in front of you:

Veo el cisne en marzo (I see the swan in March)
Veo la gaviota en mayo (I see the seagull in May)

    Frame: Veo ___ en ___

Write one full sentence from the frame. Keep el or la and every accent (watch águila, búho, gorrión, petirrojo). If you finish early, add a second sentence with a different bird.

    5 - Spin a Bird ~10 mins

The eight birds stay on the board so you can glance if you need to. First we say all eight together with el or la. Then spin the wheel: when it lands, say that bird aloud with its article. Stretch: whisper Veo … en … with a month to your partner, then volunteers share.
