This lesson focuses on telling o'clock and half past times by observing the long hand on the clock face. Pupils will practise reading these times and setting them during class activities and challenges while discussing how the hands work together.

    1 - Getting Started ~3 mins

    Look at the clocks on the board. Is the long hand straight up or straight down?

    2 - Watch and Notice ~6 mins

    Four clocks on the board. For each one, look first at the long hand: straight up or straight down. Then look at where the short hand sits.

    3 - Try It Together ~7 mins

    We set the hands on the board together. One pupil sets each time while the class watches. Before the hands are finished, say whether the long hand should point up or down.

    Set o'clock and half past

    4 - Write Two Times from Your Day ~5 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

    In your maths copy, write one o'clock time and one half-past time from your day.

    5 - Class Challenge ~8 mins

    We set these times on the board together: 4 o'clock, half past 4, half past 7, then 8 o'clock. Before each one, say long hand up or long hand down.
