You already know bonds: two parts that make a whole, like 6 and 4 making 10.
Ten children were on the bus. At the school stop some hopped off, and now only 4 are left. How many hopped off? How do you know?
A bond is two parts that make a whole. 6 and 4 make 10.
With 6 covered, 4 is left: 10 − 6 = 4.
With 4 covered, 6 is left: 10 − 4 = 6.
Same bond, two take-aways. Look at each bond the same way.
One pupil at the board finds the hiding part. Everyone else watches and agrees when asked.
The whole is set. One part is showing. Find the part that is hiding.
In your maths copy, write these two take-aways from the same bond, one under the other:
We work these take-aways together at the board: 10 − 7, then 10 − 3, then 9 − 5, then 8 − 6.
First name the bond. Then find the hiding part. The class agrees before we move on.
