Ordering Drinks (Die Getränke)

You will learn the names of eight common drinks in German together with their articles. Practise asking for a drink politely with a simple café phrase and play a bingo game to help you recognise the words when you hear them.

    1 - What Would You Order? ~5 mins

    Illustration for What would you order?Imagine you walk up to the counter at a Bahnhofscafé in Munich after school. What two drinks would you order in English?

    By the end of today you will be able to name eight drinks in German and ask for one out loud with a polite bitte.

    By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Name eight drinks in German with der, die or das
    • Ask for a drink using a short German phrase
    • Spot drink words when you hear them

    2 - Eight German Drinks ~10 mins

    Here are today's eight drinks. Look at the picture and the English first. Listen to the German, then say it with the class. Listen for the article every time, and notice that every German noun starts with a capital letter.

    3 - Drinks Bingo ~10 mins

    Tick each drink on your bingo card as you hear it. First full line calls out!

    4 - Into Your Copy ~3 mins

    Open your copy and write the eight drinks with their articles, then circle the two you would order at the café.

    5 - Spin and Order ~10 mins

    You are at the café counter. First we all practise the order phrase together. Then the wheel lands on a drink and that pupil asks for it aloud. Use the same frame every time:

    Our order phrase (same for every drink):

    Ein …, bitte. (A …, please.)

    Word bank — read the line that matches the wheel:

    • water → Ein Wasser, bitte.
    • milk → Ein Milch, bitte.
    • juice → Ein Saft, bitte.
    • apple juice → Ein Apfelsaft, bitte.
    • orange juice → Ein Orangensaft, bitte.
    • tea → Ein Tee, bitte.
    • coffee → Ein Kaffee, bitte.
    • lemonade → Ein Limonade, bitte.
    Key point

    Listen for a clear drink name and a polite bitte at the end.
