Our addition kit has six tools. Here is what each one means.
Bonds: two numbers that make ten, like 9 + 1.
Counting on: start on one number and count up, like 12 + 3.
Turnarounds: swap so you start on the bigger number, like 2 + 15 as 15 + 2.
Doubles: both numbers the same, like 7 + 7.
Near doubles: a double and one more, like 6 + 7.
Making ten: fill a ten, then add what is left, like 9 + 6.
Here is 9 + 6. Which tool would you reach for first?
Three addition facts on the ten-frames. For each one, watch which tool does the work, and be ready to name it.
For the last one, say which number you would start from before the frame appears.
Today we match addition facts to their totals. Turn two cards: a fact such as 6 + 4, and a total such as 10. Call match when the pair fits, or not this time when it does not.
In your maths copy, write the addition fact you are proudest of knowing by heart.
We work through these four facts together on the board: 5 + 5, then 9 + 1, then 6 + 7, then 8 + 5. One classmate taps the total. The rest of us watch and name the tool before each tap.
