Imagine you are putting a line of fairy lights right around the edge of the class notice board, or a fence all the way around a garden. How would you work out how much you need to buy?
The distance all the way around the edge has a name in maths. Today we find it for lots of different shapes.
Take two or three hands-up answers, not open call-outs. Listen for anyone who says measure round the edge and add it up — that is exactly where the lesson is going.
Look at these three shapes on the board — each one has its side lengths marked. Let's walk around each edge and add as we go to find the perimeter, counting every side once.
The next one is a square. Look at its perimeter before we reveal it — is it more or less than the rectangle?
The last one bends around a corner. A shape made of simpler shapes joined together — like an L — is called a composite shape. Its perimeter is still just all its outer sides added up, so here you have to add all six sides, not just the outside two.
Work each one live — trace round the edge with your finger and add aloud as you go.
A pupil comes to the board to build each shape while the rest of us follow and add the sides aloud. We start with a 5 by 3 rectangle, then reshape it into a stretched 7 by 2. Before we read each answer off the screen, let's say the sum out loud together — one side at a time, right around the shape.
The interactive opens on the 5 by 3 rectangle. You reshape it live by dragging the corners to stretch it to 7 by 2. Bring a different pupil to the board for each rectangle so the turns are shared across the room.
Before you read the perimeter off the screen, get the class to add the sides aloud first, then check against the readout. On the 7 by 2 shape, watch for pupils who add only two sides (7 + 2 = 9) rather than all four; ask have you walked the whole way round?
After the rectangles, look back at the L-shape from Watch and Notice and ask what the perimeter would be if it were a plain 6 by 5 rectangle instead. This sets up the wrap.
In your maths copy, sketch each of today's shapes with all its sides labelled. Then write the sum of all the sides underneath and circle the perimeter total.
Walk the room glancing at whether every side is labelled and every side is added once — this is whole-class copybook practice, not marking. The common miss is a labelled side that never makes it into the sum.
Now measure for real. First find the perimeter of a desk top and your maths book with a metre stick or ruler. Then measure three shapes on the perimeter sheet: a triangle, a five-sided shape and an L-shape. For each one, measure every side, add them up, and record the perimeter in your copy.
This is the practice round — real objects and the printed sheet are measured at desks, and the class confirms each reading aloud at the end. Circulate and catch slips on the spot.
The L-shape is where pupils lose sides — remind them to count how many sides they have before totalling. On the printed polygons, watch for reading the ruler from the 1 mark instead of the 0 mark. The desk top may need the tape laid twice; help groups add the two lengths. Fast groups move on to the hexagon in the stretch task.
