Here is a pictogram of goals scored by four football clubs. But look closely at the key: one football stands for 10 goals, not one.

If a club's row has 3 footballs, how many goals is that? And what do you think two and a half footballs would mean?

Watch three pictograms, each with a different key. Read the key first, then work out the total. For the first one: 4 symbols, each worth 2. The last one has a half symbol, so get ready to say what half of the key is worth.

Today we build and read three pictograms together on the board. We choose a key that fits the biggest number, then place the symbols.

We build these three, in order:

• Medals won by three teams. The biggest value is 20.
• Points scored. The biggest value is 30.
• A row of 25 on a key of 10.

Today we read scaled pictograms and answer a question about each. The rounds build up:

• A whole-symbol row on a key of 2.
• A row with a half symbol on a key of 10.
• The total across all the rows, on a key of 5.
• How many more one row has than another, on a key of 10.
