Quick show of hands: which sport does this class play most? Football, basketball, swimming, something else? Keep your hand up if you already know the German word for that sport. Later we will hear about a PE favourite in German schools that is rare in Ireland — see if you can guess which sport before the discussion. By the end of today you will name eight sports in German, say which ball sports you play, and say which sport you like best.

We will tap each sport on the board, listen, then say it back together as a class. Watch which ones take der and which take das, and listen for the soft sch sound in Schwimmen.

After all eight sports, we learn two sentence frames:

Use the bingo card you have been given. Listen carefully. When you hear a sport from today's list, cross it off on your paper card. First full line calls out!

Teacher spins the wheel. One volunteer mimes the sport. The class whispers the German word with der or das, then the volunteer says it aloud. If it is a ball sport, the class then says Ich spiele … with that sport. If anyone is stuck, we play the audio and try again.
