    1 - Introduction ~5 mins

    Today you will

    • check what a stranger can see about you online
    • tighten the privacy settings in Chrome
    • pick one change to make to your footprint this week

Illustration for IntroductionYour digital footprint is everything about you that people can find online.

    Warm-up

Think of the app you use most. Could a stranger see your full name, school, face or location on it? Keep your guess. You will test it soon.

    2 - Key Concepts ~7 mins

Your digital footprint is everything about you online, including what others post.

Privacy settings decide who can see your posts.

The public view is what a stranger sees when they are not signed in.

GDPR is the EU law that protects your personal data. It lets you ask a company what data it holds on you, or ask it to delete it.

    Example

Aoife checked Instagram in a private window and saw her school jumper. She took her school name out of her bio.

    3 - Step-by-step Task ~18 mins

Use Google Chrome for this lesson. Watch your teacher first, then follow the steps for your device in the box below.

Use a private window for any search about yourself. If anything upsets you, tell your teacher quietly.

    4 - Common Issues ~3 mins

    If you get stuck

    • If you can't find Privacy and security, type privacy in the search box at the top of Settings.
    • If your search shows someone else with your name, only write down results that are clearly about you.
    • If you don't use social media, check your school email name and your browser settings instead.
    • If something online upsets you, stop and tell your teacher quietly.

    5 - Independent Practice ~17 mins

    Independent Practice

Your goal: Make a one-page audit of your digital footprint.
    Time: ~15 minutes
Task: Watch your teacher make the file first, then:
    1. In {{code:Project_Portfolio/09_specialism/sm4}}, make a document called {{code:sm4_digital_footprint_audit}}.
    2. Type these five headings down the page.

    Platforms I use

    Publicly visible

    Browser privacy finding

    GDPR note

    One change this week

    1. Write a few short lines under each heading, using your notes.
    2. Under GDPR note, name one right and where you would start, like Privacy Centre. Don't send a request.
    3. Under One change this week, say what you will do, when, and why it matters for your Something Real project.
    Success criteria:
    • My file is saved in {{code:09_specialism/sm4}}.
    • It says what a stranger can see about me.
    • It has one browser finding and one GDPR right.
    • It has one change I will make this week, and why.
