Look at this jug. The water has stopped somewhere between the 200 ml mark and the 400 ml mark. It is past 200, but it has not reached 400.
Hands up: how could we work out exactly how much water is in there, when the line sits in between two numbers?
Take two or three hands-up answers, not open call-outs. Give five seconds of quiet think-time first.
You are only fishing for the idea that we look at the marks either side and work out what is in between — don't confirm a number yet.
Four jug readings on the board. Before each one, work out what each little step is worth by counting the marks between two numbers. Then read where the water stops.
Watch the last one especially: the water lands exactly halfway between two marks, so its value sits halfway between them too.
Say verbatim before each: what is one step worth here? The step size changes between jugs — that is the point to hold out for.
Now we'll read four jugs together. Each jug appears on its own, one at a time. Work out one step first, then read where the water stops and check your answer.
Send an individual pupil up to read each jug and check it; the class agrees or corrects out loud before you move to the next one.
Before each reading ask the class what is one step worth on this jug? Re-count the marks each time, because the step size keeps changing.
The 450 ml and 550 ml jugs use steps of 50 ml, so there is a mark right on each of those values — hold pupils to counting the smaller step rather than assuming 100 ml.
In your maths copy, write the step size and the reading for each of the three jugs on the board, one under the other. Write each one like this:
Count the marks before you write the step size each time.
Walk the room glancing at whether pupils wrote the step size before the reading — this is whole-class copybook practice, not marking. Watch for anyone reusing the same step size for all three.
Today we read the jug at group stations. Each group has its own jug and water tray. After each careful pour, work out one step and read the level. First fill to 200 ml. Then top up to 500 ml. Then pour some back to 300 ml. Last, fill right up to 1 litre.
This is the practice round. Set up fixed stations, one jug and water tray per group of four, so each group works its own jug rather than passing one around the whole class. Pupils read the level after each pour and the group agrees on it.
Circulate and catch two slips on the spot: reading from above the water instead of at eye level, and reading the wrong step size when a jug's numbering differs. When a group reaches 1 litre, ask them to say it two ways — 1000 ml and 1 litre.
