Think about the school library over one whole week. Some days it is busy and lots of books go out; other days it is quiet. If we drew a bar chart of the books borrowed each day, which day do you think would have the tallest bar, and which day the shortest? How could a chart show you the busiest day in a single glance, without counting anything?
Take three hands-up answers, not open call-outs. This is a predicting hook, so no chart is on screen yet; sketch a rough five-bar frame on the board only if the class needs something to point at while they guess. Do not read exact values — this beat is about the idea that a chart shows tallest and shortest by height alone. Save 'how many exactly' for the next step.
Four charts to look at, one after another. For each one, watch how we run a finger from the very top of a bar straight across to the number scale to read it. When the top of a bar sits between two numbers, we start at the line below it and count the small steps up. The last chart asks a 'how many more' question, so be ready to say which two bars we compare.
Today we read this chart together: 'Minutes of reading each day'. First we read the tallest bar. Then we read the shortest bar. Next we read Thursday, whose top sits between two scale lines, by counting the small steps up from the line below. Finally we work out how many more minutes were read on the busiest day than the quietest.
Talk this one through together — pupils take turns at the board and the class agrees or corrects out loud.
Point pupils at the top of each bar and across to the scale — the commonest slip is reading the middle of the bar. Thursday reads 7: its top sits between the 6 and 8 marks, so start at 6 and count one small step up. Ask which two marks it sits between before anyone commits to a number. For the last part, read Wednesday (12) and Monday (4) and subtract to get 8 more.
Look back at the reading-minutes chart we read together on the board. In your maths copy, write the value of each bar, one under the other. Then write one sentence saying which day had the most and which day had the least.
Walk the room glancing at whether pupils read the top of each bar and off the scale — this is whole-class copybook practice, not marking. Watch for anyone reading Thursday's between-the-lines bar as the nearest line rather than counting up to the exact value of 7.
Today we work through these charts in order. First we read the tallest bar on a 'goals scored' chart. Then we read a bar whose top lands between two scale lines. Next we work out how many more goals one team scored than another and set the bars to match. Before the last challenge we find a total together: we read every bar, write the four numbers, and add them one by one. Finally we read every bar on the last chart, add them to find the total goals, and set the bars to match. Each one asks a bit more careful reading than the last.
This is the practice round. Pupils take turns at the board, check each answer, and the class confirms before moving on. Keep the board work brisk rather than over-explaining.
Use the scale lines, don't guess the height. On the second challenge, Team C reads 9: its top sits between the 8 and 10 marks, so start at 8 and count one small step up.
Before the last challenge, model the total using the chart just finished (challenge 3). Read every bar first: Team A 8, Team B 12, Team C 6, Team D 4. Write the four numbers in a column. Add down out loud: 8 + 12 = 20, 20 + 6 = 26, 26 + 4 = 30. Method once: read every bar, write the numbers, add them one by one. Then open the final challenge.
Watch for pupils who add only two bars, or who guess the total from overall height without reading each value. Ask the class to predict which bar is tallest before it is confirmed.
