Look at our school-day pictures. We come in, we have little break, and we go home. What time does each one happen at our school?
On a clock, the short hand is the little hand and the long hand is the big hand. Three o'clock times on the board. For each clock, look at the long hand first, then the short hand. At o'clock, the short hand points at the hour number.
Cover the long hand with your eyes for a moment: can you still name the hour from the short hand alone?
Watch the clock. One pupil reads the time at the board and the class agrees or helps. We will read 8 o'clock, then 2 o'clock, then 6 o'clock, then 11 o'clock. Long hand first, then short hand.
In your maths copy, write the time we go home from school as an o'clock time.
Look at the clock on the board. One pupil names the time; the class agrees or helps. Long hand first, then short hand. We will read these o'clock times together: 7 o'clock → 10 o'clock → 5 o'clock → 12 o'clock. After each one, which hand tells you the hour?
