- use five checks to match a format to its purpose and audience
- compare slide decks, infographics, podcasts and short videos
- pick and explain one format for your VET interview
Warm-up
Write one purpose word, such as persuade, and one line about who your audience is. Which format would you pick first: slides, an infographic, a podcast or a video? Hold on to that answer.
2 - Key Concepts ~8 mins
Run these five checks in order.
- Purpose: is it to inform, persuade, instruct, report or reflect?
- Audience: who is watching, and is it live?
- Constraints: what limits you, like time or sound?
- Content: a list of points suits slides, one picture story suits an infographic, a spoken story suits a podcast, and a demo suits a video.
- Format: pick the best fit, and name one format you ruled out.
Aoife picked slides because she wants to persuade, and the panel can follow them while she talks.
3 - Step-by-step Task ~13 mins
Your teacher will do Brief 1 with the class first. Then you will do Brief 2 on your own, using the five checks. Follow the steps in the box below.
Brief 1 (class demo): Persuade the VET interview panel that a phone-repair side hustle is realistic. Audience: SEC examiner and teacher, live, about 3 minutes. Content: problem, offer, simple costs, one next step.
Brief 2 (you run this): GAA club one-page visual for the clubhouse noticeboard showing fundraiser totals, top sellers, and remaining target. Audience: players and parents who glance while walking past. Content: three or four numbers and a clear takeaway.
4 - Common Issues ~4 mins
Common snags
- I picked the app I like best. Go back and do the five checks in order, then choose.
- Two formats both seem fine. Pick the one that works best in a three-minute live interview.
- My file is not in the sm2 folder. Move it into {{code:Project_Portfolio/09_specialism/sm2}}.
- I don't have a purpose yet. Use persuade, with the SEC examiner and teacher at a live interview.
