A mystery shape is hiding in the feely bag. One volunteer will reach in and feel it with fingers only, with no peeping.
Listen to what the finder says. How many pointy corners? How many straight sides? What shape could it be?
Watch the shapes on the board. For each one we trace the straight sides first, then the corners. We count the straight sides, then the corners, then we know the shape's name.
A diamond can have 4 straight sides and 4 corners too, the same counts as a square.
Does this round shape have any straight sides to count? A circle is different: no straight sides and no corners at all.
Today we explore: find a shape that matches the clue. First a shape with exactly 3 corners, then a shape with exactly 4 corners, then a shape with 6 sides. Trace the sides while the class counts along.
In your maths copy, draw a triangle. Write 3 for the sides and 3 for the corners.
Today we work through these clues together: find the shape with 3 sides, then a shape with 4 corners, then the diamond with 4 corners, then the shape with 6 sides. Count the sides aloud before you check.
