Out of the shopping bag come a dice and a cereal box. These two box shapes are cousins. What is the same about them? What is different?
A solid shape is a box shape you can hold.
A face is a flat side of a solid.
Look at the dice and the cereal box. What is the same about their faces? What is different?
A cube has faces that are all the same square.
A cuboid has long faces and short faces. Not every face is a square.
The gift box looks square from the front. Check the side too before you name it. Turning a shape does not change its name.
One of you comes to the board and sorts a shape into Cube or Cuboid. The rest of us watch. Check every face. Show thumbs-up for cube or thumbs-sideways for cuboid.
Look at the board. Copy the word cube and draw one square beside it. Copy the word cuboid and draw one long rectangle beside it. Under your drawings write: check every face.
Sort each shape into Cube or Cuboid. Check every face before you decide, because some boxes look square from the front.
