Taking Away: How Many Are Left?

Pupils explore taking objects away from a set on a ten-frame. They watch examples of sets shrinking, practise counting what is left and draw crossed-out dots in their copybooks. Focus is on using 'take away' language.

    1 - Getting Started ~3 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedFive buns sit on a plate at little break. Our class puppet gobbles two of them. What happened to our set of buns? How many are left?

    2 - Watch and Notice ~8 mins

Some counters go away. The set gets smaller. We say take away. Then we count the counters that stay. That is how many are left.

Watch each take-away. First the full set. Then some go away.

What if every counter goes away?

    3 - Try It Together ~10 mins

Take away means some leave the set and we count what stays. One friend puts counters on the ten-frame and takes some away. Everyone else watches and helps count how many stay.

    5 - Class Challenge ~8 mins

We say each take-away together. Then one friend shows how many stay on the ten-frame and taps Check.
