Sixteen beanbags lived in the PE basket. Three went out to the yard for the game. How many are still in the basket? Whisper your guess and hold it.
Three take-aways on the number line. The start number is where we stand first. We do not say it again as a jump: the first number we say is one less. Watch 16 − 3: stand on 16 and stay there, then say 15, 14, 13. If someone says "16, 15, 14" they have used the start as a jump by mistake.
On the last one there are more little jumps, so keep counting carefully all the way.
You have already counted back below ten, so the jumps will feel familiar in the teens. One pupil jumps on the board; everyone else counts each landing aloud. We will try 15 − 3, then 17 − 2, then 16 − 4, then 19 − 3, one fact at a time.
In your maths copy, write this take-away sentence carefully, one time:
Today we work through these take-aways together: 14 − 2, then 17 − 3, then 19 − 4, then 18 − 5. One pupil stands on the start and jumps back; everyone else watches the landings. Check each answer before we move on.
