You are at a French market stall and nobody speaks English. You want fruit. What do you actually need to say: a hello, the fruit, how many, a polite word, and a thank you?
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name eight fruits in French with le or la
- Ask for two of something, or a kilo, with s'il vous plaît
- Wrap the order in Bonjour, Merci and Au revoir
- Explain one market custom from France
Take three or four quick ideas only. Steer them toward a greeting, fruit name, quantity, a polite phrase such as s'il vous plaît (seel voo PLAY), and a thank you. Do not teach the full fruit list yet; the word-table in the next step does that. If anyone offers a favourite fruit, smile and park it for the table.
Tap each fruit on the table, listen, then say it back together. First pass: all eight with the pictures. Second pass: drill the trickier ones again. Notice le and la as you go, and listen for the sound in l'orange (like the s in treasure).
Buying frames (keep these on the board all lesson):
Deux ______, s'il vous plaît. (Two ______, please.)
Un kilo de ______, s'il vous plaît. (A kilo of ______, please.)
Singular to buying form:
la pomme becomes deux pommes | la fraise becomes un kilo de fraises
Rule: after deux or un kilo de, drop le/la and use the plural.
Plurals for the gaps:
pommes (POM) · bananes (bah-NAN) · oranges (oh-RAH(n)zh) · citrons (see-TROH(n)) · fraises (FREZ) · raisins (reh-ZAH(n)) · poires (PWAR) · cerises (suh-REEZ)
For orange by the kilo: un kilo d'oranges (de + orange contracts to d').

Market shell (hello, order, thank you, goodbye):
Bonjour (bon-ZHOOR): hello
Merci (mair-SEE): thank you
Au revoir (oh ruh-VWAR): goodbye
Pass 1 (about 4 minutes): tap each word on the interactive; class repeats twice (whole class, then by table). Point at the article so the pair sticks, but do not quiz gender; notice-and-repeat only.
Pass 2 (about 3 minutes): revisit the four harder items only (la fraise, la poire, la cerise, le raisin) with image + audio + choral repeat.
Frames and plurals (about 3 minutes): leave the buying-frames box (with the plural mini-list and the one-line rule) pinned on the IWB for the rest of the lesson. Model the two worked examples slowly. Confirm cognates they spot (la banane, l'orange, le citron). If the IWB is hard to read from the back, also write the eight plurals large on the board once.
Plural mini-list with phonetics (same list as on screen; use if you need to re-cue a frozen pupil):

Market shell: chorus Bonjour, Merci and Au revoir twice each with the phonetics on screen, adding a simple gesture (wave hello, hand on heart for thank you, wave goodbye). These four moves (hello, order, thank you, goodbye) are the shell they will use on the wheel and again in the next café lesson. Do not skip this chorus: the shell is taught here on purpose so the café lesson can build on it.
Your teacher will give you a bingo card. Listen carefully and mark each fruit as you hear it. First full line calls out. Whisper the French word (with le or la) as you mark it so the sound sticks.
How to Play Bingo:
Option 1: Students on Devices (Digital Version)
- Use the digital version where your teacher view of the lesson displays the cards that are being called out.
- Play the pronunciation sound of each word and the children mark it off their unique digital bingo card.
- Each student has a randomised bingo card so winners will vary!
Option 2: Print Out the Bingo Cards
- Print out the Bingo Cards from the attachment above, cut out the cards, and give one to each student.
- You call out the vocabulary words and students mark off their sheets.
- First student to complete a line (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) calls "Bingo!" and wins.
Open your copy. The two frames stay large on the board. Choose any two fruits from the word-table (start with ones you already said on the wheel if you like). Copy each frame and fill only the fruit gap. Keep the accents and s'il vous plaît.
Deux ______, s'il vous plaît.
Un kilo de ______, s'il vous plaît.
Worked examples: Deux cerises, s'il vous plaît. · Un kilo de poires, s'il vous plaît.
This step comes after oral practice on the wheel so writing follows speaking. Leave the gapped stems, the plural mini-list from step 2, and one worked example of each frame on the IWB for the whole step. Pupils choose fruits from the still-visible word-table and fill only the gap; they are not inventing the sentence from scratch.
Walk the room and check three things only: article dropped after deux / un kilo de, plural form from the mini-list (not Deux la pomme), and s'il vous plaît with its accents. Point at the plural list on the IWB if someone freezes. Do not collect the copies.
Spin the wheel. When it lands on a fruit, every pair first whispers a full mini-order to each other, then one volunteer says it aloud to the class stall.
Your mini-order (use the frames still on the board):
Bonjour.
Deux ______, s'il vous plaît. or Un kilo de ______, s'il vous plaît.
Merci. Au revoir.

Keep both buying frames, the plural mini-list, and the market shell on screen for the whole activity. Model one full turn first: spin, land on la fraise, whisper with a partner, then say aloud Bonjour. Un kilo de fraises, s'il vous plaît. Merci. Au revoir. Class answers as the stallholder with Voilà or Bien sûr.
Scaffold the load: first three or four spins use only the core four (la pomme, la banane, l'orange, la fraise). Once those frames feel secure, open the wheel to all eight. Pairs choose deux… or un kilo de… themselves so nobody is cold-called on a frame they have not chosen.
Ready prompts if a pupil freezes (whisper the start; let them finish):
- la pomme → Deux pommes, s'il vous plaît / Un kilo de pommes, s'il vous plaît
- la banane → Deux bananes, s'il vous plaît / Un kilo de bananes, s'il vous plaît
- l'orange → Deux oranges, s'il vous plaît / Un kilo d'oranges, s'il vous plaît

- la fraise → Deux fraises, s'il vous plaît / Un kilo de fraises, s'il vous plaît

After each spin: every pair whispers the full shell first; then one volunteer performs to the stall. Alternate number and kilo across the class so both frames get used.
