A tiny ladybird sits beside a long metre stick. Could we measure a ladybird with that stick? What do we need instead?
Hold up your ruler. Today we learn the small unit that lives on it: the centimetre.
Three small things on the ruler. For each one, watch the two careful steps: zero at the start, then we read the number at the other end.
Same two steps every time: zero at the start, read the end.
One friend comes to the board. We help them put zero at the start on the rubber, then read the end.
In your maths copy, measure two small things from your desk with your ruler. Write each length in whole centimetres.
Then draw one careful straight line with your ruler.
We measure these together: a crayon, a lolly stick and a pencil.
One friend at the board. Put zero at the start every time, then read the mark at the far end. We agree, then Check.
