Look at this giant + sign! You have seen it before — maybe in a book or on the board. Where have you seen it? What do you think it tells us to do?
The + sign is the joining sign. It says and (or plus). A plus story is two numbers with a + between them. Here are three plus stories on the ten-frame: 3 + 2 means three and two more — two colours on one frame.
One pupil builds both parts on the frame: the first number in red, then the second number in yellow. The class reads ___ plus ___. We'll try 2 + 3, then 4 + 2, then 6 + 3, then 5 + 4.
Watch the board first: we cross two straight arms to make a clean +. Then, in your maths copy, write 3 + 2 and 4 + 1, forming the + sign carefully.
Your turn at the board. Build both parts of the plus story: the first number in red, then the second number in yellow. Then check. The class reads the plus story aloud and agrees. We'll do 2 + 2, then 3 + 4, then 5 + 3, then 4 + 6.
