1 - Getting Started ~3 mins
I need 5 cent for the shop. I could hand over one 5c coin… or could I make 5c a different way?
Think of one idea. Keep it in your head. We will check it on the coin tray.
2 - Watch and Notice ~8 mins
Watch the coin trays. We add the cent on each coin to find the total. Read the coins, add the cent, then say the total.
Now look at 10c built different ways. What stays the same? What changes?
3 - Try It Together ~10 mins
One of us will tap coins onto the tray. The rest of us watch and help. We read the total aloud before we clear it.
We will try these:
- 5c with 1c and 2c coins
- 5c another way
- 10c with 5c coins
- 10c with a mix of coins
Make 5c and 10c different ways
4 - Write Two Ways for 5c ~2 mins
In your maths copy, write two different ways to make 5c.
- 5c
- 2c + 2c + 1c
You may copy these, or write two other ways you found.
5 - Class Challenge ~10 mins
One pupil builds each amount on the board. The class helps and confirms before the next one.
Make these on the board:
- 5c without a 5c coin
- 10c using only 5c coins
- 10c with a mix of coins
The pupil at the board taps Check when the tray is ready.
