One bundle of ten sticks and four loose sticks in my hand. How many sticks am I holding? Who can say it fast, without counting every stick?
Teen numbers are the numbers from 11 to 19. Each one is one ten and some loose ones. The bundle of ten sticks is the same idea as the ten-rod on our mat. Watch four teen numbers — look at the ten-rod, the loose units, and the 1 at the front.
Look carefully at this next one — the units column has only one cube.
One pupil builds at the board. We will build 13, then 16, then 12. The rest of us watch and say one ten and ___ together before we check.
In your maths copy, draw the rod and units for 14 and write 14 beneath.
Turns at the board: 12, then 15, then 11. One pupil builds each teen with one ten-rod and the right units. After each Check, we all say what the 1 at the front stands for.
