In this lesson you are participating in the real work of reading the Irish FET landscape, not reading about it from a distance.
Apprenticeships, traineeships and FET classroom routes get mixed up constantly. Today you will sort the features that actually separate them, then investigate one real FET course in your own county. A brochure summary is not the work. The closing argument is: why this route beats the nearest apprenticeship or Higher Education path to the same job.
Three terms you will use for the rest of Strand 1.2. Read the table, then keep them in mind when you sort the feature cards.
| Term | What it means for you | Real example |
|---|---|---|
| Traineeship: a shorter training route, often classroom-led and employer-linked, measured in months rather than years. | When you compare routes to the same job, check length, pay and who delivers the training. | A six-month hospitality traineeship through a local ETB with hotel placement days |
| FET: Further Education and Training. PLCs, ETB courses, traineeships and other post-school routes outside Higher Education. | Your investigation today must name a real FET course available in your county, not a generic pathway. | A QQI Level 5 Business PLC that can lead to work or advanced entry to a degree |
| QQI: Quality and Qualifications Ireland, which recognises awards on the National Framework, including Levels 5 and 6 used across FET. | Level and progression matter for your closing argument: where does this award actually take someone next? | QQI Level 5 Healthcare Support progressing to Level 6 or straight into a care role |
On the National Framework, a QQI Level 5 award is often a one-year PLC or entry-to-work qualification that can lead into employment, further FET, or advanced entry to Higher Education. A QQI Level 6 award is typically more advanced or specialised and can strengthen the link into Higher Education or more senior roles. When you write your closing argument, say where this award level can take someone next.
Apprenticeships are usually longer, employer-based and paid from early on. Traineeships are shorter and often blend classroom and workplace. FET classroom routes (including many PLCs) are ETB- or college-led and frequently carry QQI Level 5 or 6 awards that can open employment, specialisation or advanced entry into Higher Education.
Part 1: the sort (about 5 minutes). Drag each feature card into Apprenticeship, Traineeship or FET. This sort is not scored as right or wrong. Some cards honestly fit more than one route. Put each where you would defend it and be ready to tell your partner why. The borderline cards are the ones worth the argument.
Part 2: your FET Investigation (the rest of the step). Create (or open if you already started it) FET Investigation Strand1.2 in your Strand 1.2 Digital Portfolio folder. Use a short document with these headings already in place:
Pick one real FET course available in your county (PLC, ETB programme or traineeship). Start from the two career or course interests you logged earlier in Strand 1.2, or pick any field you would actually consider. Use Qualifax, Careers Portal, fetchcourses.ie or your local ETB course list.
Then write the closing argument that makes this more than a brochure: name the nearest apprenticeship or Higher Education route to the same job, and argue why you would take this FET course instead. Use at least two concrete differences (length, cost, entry, pay while learning, location, or what you can do on day one after finishing).
Today's exit check: a named local course plus a draft closing comparison must land before you leave. Thin cost or entry lines can be finished before next lesson; an investigation with no named alternative is not banked yet.
This investigation stays in your Digital Portfolio. It stocks the pathway evidence you will redraw later in Strand 1.2 and draw on for Portfolio in Action.
Talk these through with the person beside you, then decide whether your FET Investigation still needs a sharper closing argument before you leave.
Portfolio action (optional): in FET Investigation Strand1.2, add one line naming the weakest fact you still need to check, and where you will check it.
Today you participated in sorting real features of Irish progression routes and investigated a local FET option with a genuine comparison attached.
Keep FET Investigation Strand1.2 in your Strand 1.2 Digital Portfolio folder. It stocks the pathway evidence you will redraw later in the strand and draw on for Portfolio in Action, against what you know now rather than today's first impressions.
