1 - Animals You Have Stood Beside ~5 mins
Which of these animals have you actually stood beside: a cow, a pig, a sheep, a horse? Hands up for each one. Today you will learn their German names, plus four more farm animals you might meet on a trip.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name eight farm animals in German
- Spot those words when you hear them
- Write each one with its article
Take a quick show of hands for cow, pig, sheep and horse. Keep it light and move on after about a minute; the point is curiosity, not a full farm story. Do not teach any German words yet. The flashcards in the next step do that work.
2 - Eight Farm Animals ~10 mins
Look at each farm animal. Listen to the German name with its article, then say it with the class. Watch for the capital letter and keep die or das with every word today.
You will meet the animals in two groups of four. After the first group, say those four again together before the next four appear.
Teacher-led flashcards on the IWB (you flip; pupils do not control the cards). Hear-and-repeat first: show image and German with audio, class repeats chorally twice per card. Do not ask pupils to guess German before they have heard it.
Pass 1 (about 4 minutes): cow, pig, sheep, horse.
die Kuh (dee KOO), das Schwein (dahs SHVINE), das Schaf (dahs SHAHF), das Pferd (dahs FAIRT). The pf in Pferd is like the start of 'helpful' said quickly. Quick choral recap of all four before moving on.
Pass 2 (about 4 minutes): chicken, duck, goat, goose.
das Huhn (dahs HOON), die Ente (dee EN-tuh), die Ziege (dee TSEE-guh), die Gans (dee GAHNS). End with a fast chorus of all eight if time allows.
Optional second pass only if the class is secure: show English first and invite a quiet recall, then flip to check. Point at the article every time. Today's set uses only die and das (no der).
3 - Farm Animal Bingo ~10 mins
Listen carefully and mark each farm animal as you hear it on your card. First full line shouts Bingo! then reads their animals back in German with the article. Say the German quietly to yourself as you mark it.
How to Play Bingo:
Option 1: Students on Devices (Digital Version)
- Use the digital version where your teacher view of the lesson displays the cards that are being called out.
- Play the pronunciation sound of each word and the children mark it off their unique digital bingo card.
- Each student has a randomised bingo card so winners will vary!
Option 2: Print Out the Bingo Cards
- Print out the Bingo Cards from the attachment above, cut out the cards, and give one to each student.
- You call out the vocabulary words and students mark off their sheets.
- First student to complete a line (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) calls "Bingo!" and wins.
4 - Into Your Copy ~3 mins
Open your copy. Write four farm animals from today's list, each with its article and a capital letter (die or das). Keep the word list on the board while you write.
Pause the board. Everyone writes; this is the only three minutes where every pupil's pen is moving. Keep one flashcard set or the bingo word list visible so spellings and articles stay correct. Any four from the eight are fine. Do not ask for animal sounds in German (they were not taught). Optional stretch if someone finishes early: tick a favourite animal, or add the English sound (moo, oink) beside one word. Do not collect these.
5 - Spin the Farm Wheel ~10 mins
Before the wheel spins, whisper all eight farm animals with their articles together with the class. Then the wheel lands on a farm animal. When it is your turn, say the full German word with its article. If you need help, a classmate or the audio can prompt you, then you say the correct form so everyone hears it.
Before the first spin (about 30 seconds): whole-class whisper rehearsal of all eight with articles, led from the board list. This lowers the stakes before cold-calling.
Spin on the board and cold-call or take volunteers. Insist on article plus capitalised noun: das Pferd, not Pferd. If a pupil hesitates, allow a classmate prompt or replay the audio from the wheel without penalty, then have that pupil repeat the correct form so the class hears success. Aim for as many different pupils as you can in ten minutes. Today's set is only die and das.
