1 - Stuck at the Door ~5 mins
You already know how to say hello in Spanish. Try greeting your teacher now.
Nice one. But wait... how do you end the chat? Walking away in silence feels odd. Today we learn eight ways to close a conversation properly.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Recognise eight Spanish goodbyes and say the core ones clearly
- Pick the right goodbye for a friend, an adult, or either
- Open and close a short Spanish exchange
Invite the class to greet you with a phrase from earlier in this unit, such as Hola (OH-lah) or Buenos días (BWEH-nohs DEE-ahs). Accept two or three greetings, then freeze with a puzzled look and ask how the conversation ends. Do not supply the answer yet; the flashcards will reveal the eight goodbyes.
2 - Eight Spanish Goodbyes ~10 mins
Here are today's eight Spanish goodbyes, in two groups of four.
We will flip each card, listen to the audio first, then say it twice together. Listen for the soft breathy sound at the start of hasta, and the strong second beat in Adiós (ah-DYOHS).
Eight ways to leave a chat: try each one bigger than the last!
After the cards we will sort a few under Friend, Adult, or Either and leave that sort on the board for later.
Run the flashcards on the IWB in two mini-sets of four. For each card: flip to show Spanish, play the audio, then choral repeat twice (once all together, once by table). Only then reveal the English. Do not ask pupils to guess the Spanish before hearing it.
All eight with pronunciation (board delivery):
- Adiós (ah-DYOHS) — stress on DYOHS; the d is soft between vowels
- Hasta luego (AHS-tah LWEH-goh)
- Hasta mañana (AHS-tah mah-NYAH-nah) — ñ like the ny in canyon
- Chao (CHOW)
- Buenas noches (BWEH-nahs NOH-chehs)
- Cuídate (KWEE-dah-teh)
- Hasta pronto (AHS-tah PROHN-toh)
- Cuídese (KWEE-deh-seh)
Set 1 (core for speaking): Adiós, Hasta luego, Hasta mañana, Chao.
Set 2: Buenas noches, Cuídate, then the recognition extras Hasta pronto and Cuídese. Buenas noches works as both good evening and good night; tonight we use it to leave. After each card, quick thumb-signal: friend, adult, or either — confirm the answer on screen so the later copy task is retrieval.
Register answer key (project as a three-column sort after the cards; leave it on the board):
- Friend / informal: Chao, Cuídate (Chao is very informal; with adults, Adiós or Hasta luego are safer defaults)
- Adult / more formal: Cuídese
- Either (anyone, including teachers): Adiós, Hasta luego, Hasta mañana, Hasta pronto, Buenas noches
Drag or tick 3–4 phrases into each column with the class. Accept "either" as a valid label. Core phrases for later speaking and copy work: Adiós, Hasta luego, Hasta mañana, Chao, Buenas noches, Cuídate. Keep Hasta pronto and Cuídese as recognise-and-sort extras unless a confident pair chooses them.
3 - Match the Goodbyes ~10 mins
Flip two cards at a time on the board. Find each Spanish goodbye with its English meaning. Say the Spanish quietly as you turn each card.
Whole class on the IWB with volunteers taking turns. If a pair is missed twice, pause, play the audio, and say the Spanish together before moving on. Listen especially for Hasta mañana (AHS-tah mah-NYAH-nah) and the soft start of hasta. Keep the Friend / Adult / Either sort from step 2 visible beside the game so the register stays in view. No need to re-list the eight phrases; the cards show them. When a pair is found, get the class to cheer the Spanish aloud — keep energy up across all eight.
4 - Into Your Copy ~3 mins
Open your copy. From the Friend / Adult / Either sort still on the board, write three goodbyes. Next to each one, write friend, adult, or both.
Pause the interactive. Everyone writes; this is the only three minutes where every pupil's pen is moving. Leave the three-column sort fully visible so pupils copy from a taught model, not a guess. Keep one or two flashcards up for spellings and accents.
Answer key (same as step 2): Friend/informal: Chao, Cuídate. Adult/formal: Cuídese. Either: Adiós, Hasta luego, Hasta mañana, Hasta pronto, Buenas noches. Prefer core phrases for the three they write. Watch for the accent on Adiós, the accent on Cuídate/Cuídese, and the ñ in mañana. Do not collect these.
5 - Hello and Goodbye Pairs ~10 mins
You are leaving the school gate after a day in Valencia. Turn to the person beside you. The person nearest the window is A; the other is B.
First we echo three goodbyes all together. Then run the short script: A opens, B answers, both close with a goodbye. On the role-swap, each of you must pick a different goodbye from the one you used first.
Script (stay on this):
A: ¡Hola! (OH-lah)
B: ¡Hola! (OH-lah)
A: ¡Hasta luego! (AHS-tah LWEH-goh)
B: ¡Chao! (CHOW)
Your teacher will point at the goodbye bank on the board if you want a different closer. If your goodbye is clear enough that your partner waves back, you have nailed it.
Before pairs (1–2 minutes): whole-class echo of three target closers — play audio then choral repeat twice each for Hasta luego (AHS-tah LWEH-goh), Chao (CHOW), and Adiós (ah-DYOHS). Stress the second beat in Adiós; soft d between vowels. Then model the four-line exchange once with a volunteer.
Keep the script on the IWB. Project this goodbye picker bank beside it for the whole ten minutes (do not re-type it into pupil prose — point at the board):
- Adiós (ah-DYOHS) — either
- Hasta luego (AHS-tah LWEH-goh) — either
- Hasta mañana (AHS-tah mah-NYAH-nah) — either
- Chao (CHOW) — friend (very informal)
- Buenas noches (BWEH-nahs NOH-chehs) — either
- Cuídate (KWEE-dah-teh) — friend
Greetings used here are only Hola from earlier in the unit; do not add ¿Cómo estás? or Bien, gracias unless you re-teach them on the board first.
Scene prompt: leaving the school gate in Valencia. Optional stretch: one round classmate-to-classmate (friendly) and one pupil-to-teacher-on-duty (neutral or formal from the bank).
Role-swap rule: after about five minutes, signal the swap. Each pupil must use a different goodbye from their first turn. Circulate and listen for a clear goodbye rather than trailing off. After the swap, pick one pair to showcase and praise a crisp goodbye.
Core speaking targets: Adiós, Hasta luego, Hasta mañana, Chao, Buenas noches, Cuídate. Hasta pronto and Cuídese are optional extras for confident pairs only.
