Weighing with Cubes: Giving Weight a Number

Learn how cubes on a balance can give a number to an object's weight. Watch demonstrations, then try weighing items like a rubber and crayon yourself. Finally, order objects using only their cube numbers.

    1 - Getting Started ~3 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedThe class pencil case feels heavy… but how heavy? "Very" is not a number. Could cubes give us one?

    2 - Watch and Notice ~8 mins

Three objects on the balance, one at a time. Cubes sit on the other pan so the beam is level. The cube count is the weight written as a number.

Look at the three cube counts side by side. Put them in order from lightest to heaviest.

    3 - Try It Together ~9 mins

Put the object on one pan. Add cubes one at a time to the other pan until the beam sits level. Count the cubes aloud — that number is the weight.

Add cubes until the pans sit level

    4 - Write the Rubber's Weight ~2 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

In your maths copy, write: the rubber weighs ___ cubes.

    5 - Class Challenge ~14 mins

Balance each object with cubes. Then use only the cube counts to compare.

    • crayon
    • glue stick
    • stapler
    • Last one, with no balance: the scissors balanced 12 cubes and the stapler balanced 15. Which is heavier?
