What a Strong Action Record Looks Like

Study a completed Citizenship Action Record to identify strong sentences that show engagement in the action, personal reflection on learning and clear presentation. Note three specific elements to apply when you draft your own record later.

    Worked example

    1 - Start ~4 mins

    Illustration for Start

Before anyone drafts an Action Record, you need to see a strong one up close. Today you read a finished example about an action like the ones this class has already run, and you notice which sentences do the real work.

    2 - Examine ~7 mins

The Citizenship Action Record is this course's only Classroom-Based Assessment. It is reported on the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement. Each of you makes your own record, even if the action was a group one, and it is your individual role and contribution that is judged. Schools usually complete the record in second or third year, after enough of the short course to have real action to write about. Preparation and completion take about six to eight hours of class time. You choose how to present it: written, digital, visual, audio, or a mix.

    Key point

The Features of Quality judge three things: how you engaged in meaningful action, the quality of your personal reflections on your learning, and how the record is presented.

    Example

Exceptional descriptor: The action record shows how the student fully and effectively engaged in meaningful action. The student's personal reflections on their learning are of excellent quality. The record is presented in a comprehensive, creative and highly effective manner.

The walk-through next shows what those look like in real sentences.

    3 - Reading a Strong Action Record ~19 mins

Walk Orla's Citizenship Action Record together. Numbered notes pin to the phrases that make it strong against the Features of Quality. After beat 4, take sixty seconds in pairs to find the next strong phrase before it is revealed. After the last note, jot three things you would take from it for your own record in silence.

4 - Make Sense of It ~7 mins

Use the three takeaways you jotted. In pairs for one minute, sharpen each into a sentence type (a number you can stand over, a snag you will admit, a change outside the group, a view that moved). Then share so the class keeps up to four clear lines on the board for drafting later.

    5 - What You Covered ~3 mins

You can recognise what a Citizenship Action Record contains, where it is reported, and which kinds of sentence make one strong against the Features of Quality. Next you choose which of your three actions to record.
