When Dignity Is Denied

In this lesson you will explore the difference between rudeness and denying someone's dignity. You will create a visual piece showing an invented situation where a person's dignity is not respected, using pictures and your own words.

    1 - Start ~4 mins

Today you will make a short visual about a situation where somebody is not treated as a full person. The piece has to work for someone who was not in the room, using pictures and a few of your own words.

    2 - Rude, or Denied? ~8 mins

Read these two short scenes together.

Scene A: Someone barges past you at the lockers and does not say sorry.

Scene B: Every time you speak in class, people laugh at how you say words, and nobody stops it. After a while you stop putting your hand up.

Which one is just rude? Which one treats a person as if they do not really count?

When you have answered, read this:

    Key point

Dignity is the standing every person has simply by being human. Rudeness stings. Denying dignity goes further: it treats somebody as a problem, a joke, or someone who does not matter. Your piece today needs the second kind, not the first.

    3 - Make the Piece ~19 mins

Open the interactive and make your piece. The brief inside tells you what it needs.

    Show a dignity denial

    4 - Does It Land? ~6 mins

Swap with a partner. Do not explain your piece. Your partner has thirty seconds to say what situation they think you showed, and whether it is rude or a dignity denial.

    Then answer two questions together:

    1. What one change would make the situation clearer to someone who was not here?
    2. Did any picture need a credit line you nearly skipped?

    5 - What You Covered ~3 mins

You can tell rudeness apart from a situation where dignity is denied. You made a visual that shows one invented case, chose pictures you were allowed to use, and tested whether someone else could read it without your help.
