    1 - Getting Started ~4 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedThe shop sold 256 apples on Monday and 137 on Tuesday. Look at this sum on the board: 256 + 137. When we add big numbers like these, which part do you think we should add first, the hundreds or the units? Have a think, then hands up.

    2 - Watch and Notice ~9 mins

The interactive works four column additions, one at a time, from the right. Watch what happens to a column when it reaches ten or more. Read the units along with the screen.

    3 - Try It Together ~11 mins

The interactive holds four sums, worked one at a time with the carries shown. A pupil comes up to work each one; before we check, the rest of us predict aloud whether a column will carry. Watch how each carry lands above the next column to the left.

4 - Set the Sums Out in Your Copy ~3 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

In your maths copy, set out these two sums in hundreds, tens and units columns, one under the other. Carry where you need to, then read each total aloud to check it.

    • 348 + 234
    • 526 + 367

    5 - Class Challenge ~8 mins

Here is a fresh bank of four sums, each a little harder: 163 + 214, then 328 + 145, then 456 + 275, then 408 + 195. Say aloud how many columns will carry before we check each answer. The last one hides a zero in the tens column, so add carefully across it.
